44 Donations Out of 900,000 Readers: Help Us Secure Operations for 2027
We have officially reached over 900,000 readers today. Our readership is projected to cross one million by mid-November, but our donor count is just 44. Unless that gap closes before the year ends, there is no funded operation to carry into 2027.

We are on a road to one million readers. Based on our current trajectory, Emerald Book is projected to cross that mark by mid-November. Nine hundred thousand people already read our work organically and the curve is still climbing. We do not buy ads, we are not selling data, and we are not hiding anything behind a paywall. The audience is finding us on its own.
But just 44 people have donated to keep the operation alive.
Those two facts sit next to each other every morning when we open our dashboard, and they tell a story that cannot continue into next year without changing. We are asking you to secure 2027 now, while the audience is still growing. Not because we want a cushion, but because donations are the only thing standing between this work and silence. They fund the research, the writing, the editing, and the servers. They are the reason no advertiser, sponsor, or data broker gets to decide what we publish.
Forty-four donors out of a projected one million readers is a conversion rate of roughly 0.004%. Even against today's 900,000 reader milestone, it is 0.0048%. The benchmark for independent, ad-free publishers sits between 0.5% and 2%. If we were converting at even a conservative 0.5% of our current readership, we would have 4,500 supporters and this letter would not need to exist. The gap is not small. It is a thousandfold.
Why donations matter here — specifically
Most organizations treat donations as one revenue stream among several. For us, it is the only stream. That difference matters, because it determines what we are able to do and who we answer to.
Donations are what let us refuse advertising. Every ad dollar we turn down is a decision to stay independent, and that decision only holds if reader support replaces it. Donations are what let us keep every article free and ungated, so the reader who needs this work most is never the one locked out. Donations are what fund the slow, unglamorous parts of publishing: the research, the fact-checking, the editing, the writers who deserve to be paid for their time. And donations are what protect us from the pressure that comes with institutional money — the quiet expectation that coverage will bend toward a funder's priorities.
In other words, your donation does not just pay a bill. It decides what kind of organization we get to be. If reader funding falls short, the work does not simply shrink. It changes character, because the only remaining options are the ones we have deliberately refused: ads, data, sponsors, or closure.
Why the growth does not solve this
It is tempting to assume that a bigger audience eventually solves a funding problem. It does not, on its own. Audience growth without conversion is just a larger number of people who assume someone else is paying.
That assumption is the core problem. When content is free, high-quality, and everywhere, it looks institutional. Readers reasonably conclude that a grant, a corporate sponsor, or a parent organization is covering the cost. It is not. We do not show ads, we do not sell your data, and we do not receive grant money. The only thing keeping this platform alive is the community that reads it. Right now, that community is a thousand times larger than the group funding it.
The math to secure 2027
We are asking for a one-time annual gift to fund operations through 2027, and we are setting the target at the audience we are about to have: one million readers. Here is what it actually takes:
- If just 0.45% of one million readers (4,500 people) give once, the average gift needed is between $30 and $70 to completely fund Emerald Book for 2027.
- That is roughly the price of two or three coffees for an entire year of independent, ad-free publishing.
- Right now, only 44 people have given. We need 4,456 more before the year ends to secure 2027.
If a recurring monthly gift is easier, the numbers drop further: 2,500 readers giving $10 a month would fund our baseline operations completely. That is a conversion rate of just 0.25% of one million readers. Less than three-tenths of one percent. We are not asking the audience to carry a heavy burden. We are asking a small fraction of it to carry a light one — and to carry it on behalf of everyone else who reads for free.
If you read us regularly, we are asking you to become one of the 4,500. Not because we want to interrupt the work, but because we want to keep doing it into 2027 and beyond. Every gift, of any size, moves us closer to the number that lets us stop worrying about survival and get back to the work. Every gift also keeps a piece of this platform out of the hands of advertisers and data brokers.
We will publish a transparent progress tracker on this page and on our homepage once we cross 1,000 donors. You will be able to see exactly how far the community has come, because you deserve to see where your support goes and whether it is working. When we cross one million readers mid-November, we want to be able to report a donor number that is climbing alongside it.
One million people are about to find us. If even a fraction of that number decides we are worth keeping, 2027 will be our strongest year yet — and this work will stay free, independent, and answerable only to you. Thank you for reading. Thank you for caring. And if you are able, thank you in advance for securing the year ahead.
Help us Secure 2027.
We are projected to cross one million readers by mid-November. We will never show you ads, sell your data, or require a subscription to consume our content. Your gift is not a tip — it is the entire operating model that keeps this work independent and the truth accessible into 2027.
We just need 4,500 one-time donors to secure operations for 2027. A gift of $30 to $70 secures your share for the year. A $10 monthly gift funds the platform alongside 2,500 others.

Thank you for making this work possible.
