Affordability – Considers median gross rent.
Economic Stability – Factors in poverty rate.
Education – Accounts for high school and college graduation rates, amongst other criteria.
Emerald Rating Breakdown
5 Stars - Ideal, strong in all factors (*Emerald City).
4 Stars - Good, minor trade-offs.
3 Stars - Average, some strengths, some weaknesses.
2 Stars - Below Average, noticeable concerns.
1 Stars - Poor, major issues.
0 Stars - Very Poor, not recommended.
*Emerald Cities are ideal cities for Black people on all metrics.
Methodology
Data-Driven Insights
- Pulls real-time demographic and economic data from the U.S. Census.
- Uses geospatial analysis with PostGIS to assess locations efficiently.
Scoring System
- Each city and neighborhood is assigned a rating out of 5 stars, based on the balance of affordability, safety, and community representation.
Smart Search & Ranking
- Enter a location (city, state, neighborhood, or address).
- The system finds and ranks high-scoring places within 50 miles.
- Results are sorted by rating and displayed on an interactive map.
User-Friendly Experience
- A clean and simple design with searchable recommendations.
- Color-coded markers on the map indicate top-rated locations.
- A detailed results panel provides insights into each place’s demographics, housing costs, and safety.
